One Hundred years after Mallory's ill fated expedition to Everest, The Turner Twins are setting out on an unique scientific expedition to see how the traditional clothing of 1924 compares against modern mountaineering clothing. Will it stand the test of time?
THE MISSION
TO SEE HOW MOUNTAINEERING HAS CHANGED OVER THE PAST 100 YEARS
One hundred years after their mysterious disappearance, the Turner Twins are setting out on a unique scientific expedition to find answers - not by climbing Everest, but scaling a 6,500m peak under similar conditions.
With one identical twin wearing fully reconstructed 1924 expedition kit and the other equipped with the latest high-altitude gear, this project is designed to measure how far mountaineering has come in a century.
We are delighted to have been asked to make the traditional clothing. Handmade, using the fabrics and designs used by Mallory back in 1924.
In partnership with the University of Portsmouth, the Turner Twins will compare everything from cortisol levels, dexterity, and thermal efficiency to overall physical performance, gauging how traditional and modern clothing performs under these extreme conditions.
How Will Mallory's Original Clothing Perform?
What Will Science Tell Us?
Could Mallory & Irvine Have Made The Summit?
WHAT WE MADE
Meticulously researched clothing of the time.
We spent many hours, studying and researching the clothing that Mallory wore on his ill fated expedition. The green outer suit is made from heavy cotton gabardine in the same design that Mallory wore. The two shirts that we also made are also as he would have worn. One made from heavy silk, the other from classic wool flannel.
Cotton Gabardine
A purely natural fabric. The tight weave provides protection whilst giving the wearer a breathable outer shell.
Heavy Wool Flannel
Wool has long been used for clothing. The wool flannel shirt provides a warmer layer, whilst being entirely natural & breathable.
Silk
Silk is incredibly hard wearing whilst being incredibly light to wear. A fantastic layering fabric whilst being extraordinarily strong.
100% Natural
How will our 100% natural fabrics compare against new modern man made clothing? How would Mallory's original clothing perform?

STAY CONNECTED TO SEE HOW THE EXPEDITION IS GOING
This unique expedition is run in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth’s Extreme Environments Laboratory, renowned for studying human limits under harsh conditions. Real-time physiological data will be collected from both climbers, including body temperature, cognitive performance, cortisol levels (associated with stress), dexterity and clothing durability, offering a rare comparative insight into how clothing & climbing gear may have affected Mallory’s chances of survival and summit success in 1924.
