The Teba Jacket,
Made in Cirencester
A jacket born from the Andalusian countryside, reinterpreted through the hands of English craftsmen — and now entirely our own.
There are garments that carry the weight of their origin with quiet authority. The Teba jacket is one of them. Originally the working dress of Spanish countrymen — worn across the cork oak forests of Andalusia and the open plains of Extremadura — it has, over the decades, found its way into the wardrobes of those who value ease without sacrificing elegance.
At Barrington Ayre, we have long admired the Teba's particular genius: the combination of a relaxed, unstructured silhouette with the formal language of tailoring. It sits somewhere between a jacket and a shirt, belonging comfortably in neither category and yet entirely at home in both.
We are pleased to announce that our Teba jackets are now made entirely in Cirencester — cut and constructed by skilled hands in the heart of the Cotswolds.
A brief history of the Teba
The jacket takes its name from the Marqués de Teba — a Spanish nobleman said to have favoured the style in the nineteenth century — though its roots run deeper into Iberian rural dress. Characterised by a straight four-button front, a rear pleat for ease of movement, and two patch pockets, the Teba was designed for the outdoors. It was a jacket you could work in, ride in, and sit down to supper in without changing.
"It was a jacket you could work in, ride in, and sit down to supper in without changing."
Over time, it attracted a devoted following beyond Spain. Writers, artists, and men of a certain inclination for well-made unfussy clothing adopted it as a kind of uniform. Today, it remains one of the few genuinely versatile jackets in the canon of classic menswear.
Made in Cirencester
Bringing production to Cirencester was a deliberate decision — one rooted in our belief that provenance matters, and that the best clothes are made close to the people who wear them. Our workroom is home to craftspeople who understand cloth, who understand fit, and who understand that a jacket worn well should ask nothing of you.
Each jacket is cut from cloth selected for its handle and its longevity. We work with British and European mills whose fabrics improve with wear, softening and moulding to the wearer over time rather than diminishing. Our current offering includes a soft mid-weight linen, a brushed wool blend ideal for the shoulder season, and a compact cotton canvas that is as comfortable in July as it is in October.

How to wear it
The Teba asks very little of its wearer. It is, above all, a relaxed garment — and it should be treated as one. Wear it open over a Barrington Ayre shirt and a pair of well-worn moleskins for a day in the country. Button it fully and tuck a linen pocket square into the breast for something closer to smart. It crosses these registers without complaint.
In linen, it is the jacket you reach for on warm summer evenings and market mornings. In wool blend, it replaces the blazer you never quite liked. In canvas cotton, it is the jacket you take on trips where a suit would be too much and a fleece far too little.
"It crosses these registers without complaint."
We recommend sizing as you would a casual jacket — not a suit coat. The Teba is meant to move with you, not to contain you.
Made to order
Our Teba jackets are available in a small selection of ready-to-wear sizes, and made to measure for those who want something truly their own. Bring us a cloth, or choose from our stock; we will cut it to your dimensions and deliver a jacket that fits the way a good jacket should — unremarkably, invisibly well.
